South Sound Martial Arts

What your first class looks like

  1. Turn up fifteen minutes early

Give yourself time to find the stairs, meet whoever is coaching that night, and get your hands wrapped.

  2. Wear what you already own

Shorts, a t-shirt and a water bottle. We train barefoot on the mats. Gloves and pads are here for you to borrow.

  3. Warm up with the room

Skipping, shadow work and conditioning. Everyone does it together, whatever level they are at.

  4. Learn a combination

You will spend most of the hour on pads with a coach, drilling two or three things properly rather than twenty things badly.

Questions we get asked

Is Kun Khmer the same as Muay Thai?
They are close cousins. Kun Khmer, also called Pradal Serey, is the Cambodian art; Muay Thai is the Thai one. Both use eight points of contact and share much of the same ring craft, though Kun Khmer leans harder on elbow work and its own rhythm. If you have trained Muay Thai before, you will settle in quickly.
I have never done martial arts. Can I start here?
Yes, and most people who walk in have not. The beginner class assumes no experience at all. All skill levels are welcome.
How young do the kids classes start?
We teach kids from six years old. It is a family friendly gym and parents are welcome to stay and watch.
What does it cost?
Rates depend on which option suits you and we would rather talk it through than put a number on a page. Come in for a free first class and we will go over it in person, with no pressure to sign anything.
Do I need my own gloves?
Not to begin with. We will lend you everything for your first sessions. Most people buy their own wraps and gloves once they know they are staying.
